Melbourne Chargers Rugby Club head to Manchester UK.

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

Melbourne’s only Gay Rugby team, The Melbourne Chargers, have been embraced by Victoria’s GLBTI community – no easy task in a State that knows only AFL. Ben Lancken founded the organisation in 2009 and together with the club President, Sam Minter and player Stuart Frost, they discuss the success of the club. Many gay men have no concept of what it is like to be a part of a ‘team’, the brotherhood and mateship that only a ‘team’ can experience. The Melbourne Chargers Rugby Union Club and teams like them around the world, provide that experience and every two years, they come together to compete for the Bingham Cup – named after Mark Bingham (who is believed to have tackled hijackers on Flight 93 forcing the plane into a Pennsylvanian field on September 11, 2001 – potentially saving the lives of thousands). In just a couple of weeks The Melbourne Chargers head to Manchester (UK) for Bingham Cup 2012.
