Health, LGBTI Community, Science & Medicine, Society & Culture

Episode 04Modern Families and The Law is a four part radio series that explores some of the legal difficulties and complexities faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people when interacting with the laws of the land.

Australia, like the UK and USA is witnessing exponential growth in trans children “coming out” and parents are recognising the signs of gender dysphoria within their children and seeking medical help.

Victoria’s Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Clinic is pretty unique and does some extraordinary work for the lives of young people who are struggling in the body they were born in.

Demand for the Gender Clinic’s services is in such demand that the Victorian Government recently announced an injection of $6 million over four years to provide improved care to transgender children.

In this fourth and final episode of Modern Families and The Law we hear from Jane, the mother of Christian, a 15yo Trans guy.

JOY 94.9’s Megan Smith speaks with Dr Michelle Telfer, Clinical Lead at the RCH Centre for Adolescent Health following the multi million announcement by Victoria’s Minister Equality and Minister for Mental Health, Martin Foley.

And Sally Nicholes from Nicholes Family Lawyers joins Dean Beck to explain some of the legal necessities for young people transitioning.
