Haiti: Gays marginalised during disaster relief

North and South America

Haitian flag

“In a sense, LGBT Haitians were affected by a natural disaster, then they were affected by policy disaster that marginalised them further.” says Dr. Dale Dominey-Howes, from the UN Disaster Relief Policy Committee. “People who identified as being LGBT were being excluded from this process”. He discusses the marginalisation–and resilient networking–of members of the LGBT community in Haiti’s post-earthquake disaster relief efforts. This includes gay men being bullied (by local Haitians) out of food lines and the Red Cross workers being denied permission to explicitly help gays and lesbians. Read more about LGBT issues during earthquake relief efforts on W3JOY’s Haiti webpage.
