United States of America: Domestic woes for international LGBT champions

North and South America

USA flag“Violence against LGBT people isn’t allowed,” explains U.S. Consul-General (Melbourne) Frank Urbancic about President Obama’s historical LGBT directive to squelch LGBT discrimination worldwide. “Our role and our goal and our instructions are to make sure that at least as far as the United States is concerned, people’s sexual orientation simply is not part of the equation.”
An admirable goal. But how does this match up with events inside the U.S.?

While US Ambassadors are touting “gay rights as human rights”, back in North Carolina, two men were beaten for being gay (warning: graphic images). “We’ve had a problem with bullying and harassment for a long, long time here in North Carolina” says former Equality N.C. director Ian Palmquist.

Musician Sir Ari Gold also describes his recent experience of being asked to move to the back of the bus.

Read, listen and comment on this double standard on W3JOY’s U.S. webpage.
