New Zealand: First day of marriage equality

Asia/Pacific

“It’s a civil right, and gay couples have as much license as anyone else to marry,” simple words, but not words that every Presbyterian Minister would say.

But the Reverend Dr Mary Mayman gives her full support. Today, New Zealand legalised same-sex marriage, and World Wide Wave celebrated by chatting to the leader of Christians for Marriage Equality.

“Christians need to get their own houses in order before judging,” said Dr Mayman.

We also chatted to Cory Joseph, a political blogger from New Zealand. Mr Joseph said that it’s not about the wedding cake, but about protecting us from the bad times. “Our children and our partners are protected, we can get hospital rights, we can ensure that things happen the right way should something bad happen to us…it’s about equal recognition in the eyes of the law.”

The land of the long white cloud moves a long way forward. Catch the excitement–listen to our podcast below.
