Syria and Iraq: Escaping gay persecution

syria_flagBroadcast – 12 January 2016

The arrival of western forces in Iraq was portrayed in our media and by our politicians as ‘saving their country from tyranny’. But what about gays or lesbians in Iraq or war-torn Syria?

  • Is their life now better or worse than under the former regime?
  • With the mass exodus of refugees from Syria and Iraq, what is life like for LGBTI refugees escaping persecution?
  • How can you portray the trials of these people to western audiences like Australia?

For a look at the journey of LGBTI Syrian and Iranian refugees, we speak with:

  • Lyall Brooks (producer) and Nick Simpson-Deeks (actor) of the Midsumma Premier Event – Elegy
  • Plus we also hear of a new program for friends and family of LGBTI Iranians from Jessica Stern, Executive Director of OutRight Action International.
