Bangladesh: Murder of an LGBTI Activist

bangladesh_flagOn the day of this broadcast, news broke in the Bangladesh capital that the editor of the country’s only LGBTI magazine was brutally murdered in his home along with another man.

Zulhuz Mannan was a trail-blazer for the LGBTI community in Islamic dominated Bangladesh. Not only did he start the magazine with a small band of supporters, he was also behind their annual “Rainbow Rally”. He was openly gay in a country that does not accept gay people. He published a magazine that aimed to spread tolerance – the result of which only time will tell.

We spoke to one of the organisers behind the Roopbaan magazine when it launched in 2014 and their words are now quite confronting.

To help us dissect this senseless violence and find out what it means for the gay community in Bangladesh, we speak to Douglas Pretsell from Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation.
