Myanmar: Birth of an LGBTIQ community

myanmar_flagBroadcast – 27 September 2016

Myanmar is a country rich in gems and natural gas, yet most of its people live in poverty. Most of its years of independence have been dominated by ethnic unrest, civil war and military rule. And amongst all that, it has been fighting HIV since the late 1980s.

  • How have HIV services fostered the start of a visible LGBTIQ community?
  • What is the special “spirit” role that some trans* people play in Myanmar society?
  • How far away is Myanmar from standing on its own two feet?

To share the progress being made in this new democracy, we spend time with Gillian Fletcher, Research Fellow at La Trobe University in the area of International development practice, specialising in Myanmar.
