Living through Nazi Germany as someone who was different was a challenge at best – and a death sentence at worst. Yet somehow, a trans woman (then known as a ‘transvestite’) managed to survive and in some ways even thrive, through this period in Germany.

• Having survived the homophobic Nazi regime, was life in East Germany any better under communist rule?
• What quirky collection led to a museum to be created to house her life’s obsession?
• Is her story all as she says… or have lies and secrets reshaped the history of this fascinating character?

Helping us shine a light in the dark places of Germany from the 1940s to the 1990s, we are joined by Shaun Rennie, Director of the Midsumma show, I Am My Own Wife, all about the life of Berlin’s most notorious transgender woman – Charlotte von Mahlsdorf.
