Indonesia: Family and religious pressures trump the law

It has a population ten times the size of Australia. So if you believe that 1 in 10 people are gay, that’s a potential rainbow glow of 24 million people just to the north of Australia. We look at one of our closest and most important neighbours – Indonesia.

• It hasn’t been long since homosexuality was decriminalised – so has there been any change in the way the LGBTIQ community is viewed?
• In the battle between pleasing the family and coming out, can there be only one winner?
• And will Australia really be seen as decadent by our Indonesian neighbours if we legalise same-sex marriage?

To look at life as an LGBTIQ local, we spoke with Tirto – an Indonesian born national now living in Melbourne.
