Nigeria: Speaking up for those that can’t

It is a country where being gay could land you in gaol for 14 years. Where political leaders openly vilify gays and lesbians without fear or repercussions. Where the protestations of the international community seem to go unheard. This is modern day Nigeria.

  • Knowing there is so much hatred of gay people, what would inspire someone to come out on a television talk show?
  • How does social stigma around gay people impact the delivery of HIV prevention programs?
  • How did a television soap star become a gay activist listed in the top 100 most powerful gays in the world?

To tell his story of LGBT life in Nigeria, we were joined in the studio by Bisi Alimi – a Nigerian gay activist living in exile in the UK.
