USA: Straight white men having gay sex

Some people are 100% gay. Some are 100% straight. And there’s a whole group with a more fluid sexuality in between. But there is another group – straight men who have sexual encounters with other straight men… and they are far from gay.

• What is the role of groups, such as fraternities or the military, in fostering this behaviour?
• How do straight men rationalise these acts of gay sex?
• Could these acts actually be seen as strengthening the heterosexuality of their participants?

To explain gay acts by straight men, we spoke with Jane Ward, the author of a new book – Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men. Jane is also Associate Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of California, Riverside.
