Hey Listeners,

Sometimes pop songs try to offer general advice and counselling to listeners. Several of our selections this week offer sage advice to us such as Michael Jackson’s energetic and catchy best seller – “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough’ or The Aussie group, The Ferrets, with their big hit ‘Don’t Fall In Love’. Sometimes the message is a plea to humanity as in Jackie De Shannon’s anthem ‘Put A Little Love I Your Heart’ or advice expressed allegorically as in Kenny Rogers ‘The Gambler’.

Advice and where it comes from often figures strongly in songs such as Cat Stevens iconic advice and counselling song from father to son in ‘Father And Son’ or The Shirelles singing about a girl’s best friend, her mother, in ‘Mama Said’. The idea of a psychiatrist and a patient is captured humorously in Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren’s spoof ‘Goodness Gracious Me’. Other songs offer a more personal narrative such as Johnny Cash’s Old West advice ‘Don’t Take Your Guns To Town’, the Delltones ‘Get A Little Dirt On Your Hands’ and the Everly Brothers poignant ‘Take A Message To Mary.

So take or leave the advice but enjoy the songs!
