Tom Jones and Brenda Lee

Music

Hi Listeners,

This week we are featuring two of the biggest stars of the fifties through sixties (Brenda Lee) and mid sixties to seventies (Tom Jones). Sir Thomas Jones Woodward is a Welsh singer who has sold over 100 million records. His ‘full throated robust baritone’ voice launched him onto the public in 1965 with his first million seller ‘It’s Not Unusual’. Other big hits swiftly followed. ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ from the film of the same name and ‘Delilah’ became major hits. Sensing a wane in popularity Jones turned to recording ballads and produced huge hits like ‘Green Green Grass Of Home’. His enduring popularity was recognised when he was invited to sing at the 2014 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne.

Brenda Lee is an American artist, the top-charting female singer of the 1960s. She was fourth behind Elvis, the Beatles and Ray Charles in number of records sold. Standing only 4’9″ tall she was nicknamed ‘Miss Dynamite’ because of her powerful vocals. Brenda Lee has been singing publicly since she was five and in a career which spans fifty years, she still performs. She made her debut single ‘Jambalaya’ when she was ten after a rousing reception from audiences. Other smash hits followed: “Sweet Nothin’s’ (No 4); ‘I Want To Be Wanted’ (No 1); ‘All Alone Am I’ (No 3); ‘That’s All You Gotta Do’ (No 6) and ‘I’m Sorry’ (No 1). Brenda Lee was equally at home with both rock songs and power ballads.

So this week sit back and enjoy the feast of talent we have for you in these two great singers.
