Currency

Music

Hi Listeners

This week we are going to play songs about Currency. Money is a reasonably common theme for pop songs and there have been several hits by the Beatles, Liza Minelli, Pink Floydd and our inclusion ‘Money Money Money’ by ABBA. Interestingly, most of these songs view money in a negative sense while making money by doing so….Mmmmmm.

Teresa Brewer’s song ‘Music Music Music’ invokes a time gone by when there were Nickolodeons (or jukeboxes) and the Four Aces sing the title song from the film ‘Three Coins in The Fountain’ which depicts the historical activity of throwing coins in The Trevi Fountain in Rome and making wishes. Gene Pitney’s glorious ‘If I Didn’t Have A Dime’ also refers to jukeboxes while the Kingston Trio focuses on America’s own iconic note in ‘Green back Dollar’.

For Australia February 14, 1966 was the year decimal currency was introduced to us and many novelty songs were written at the time including Slim Dusty’s ‘The Decimal Currency Pub’. Another novelty song is Margaret Whiting’s “The Money Tree’ which taps into our own dreams of having unlimited supplies of money. Finally, Ray Charles weighs in with the antidote (when you don’t have any money) in the song ‘Busted’.

Even if you are ‘loaded’ or ‘skint’ it doesn’t cost anything to tune in and listen to an array of great songs.
