Johnnies And Bobbies

While searching through countless songs for the program I couldn’t help noticing the predominance of singers called ‘Johnny’ or ‘Bobby’. So it was an obvious decision to put together a program which featured these names. During the fifties and sixties singers like Johnny Tillotson (Poetry In Motion) and Johnny Nash (I Can See Clearly Now) were very popular. There were also songs about ‘Johnny’ (usually performed by female singers) such as Shelley Fabares (Johnny Angel) and Joanie Summers (Johnny Get Angry). In Australia too we had our own Johnnies such as Johnny O’Keefe, Johnny Farnham and Johnny Chester (Gwen).

Bobbies were also very popular. Teen idols such as Bobby Vee, Bobby Vinton (Blue On Blue), Bobby Rydell (Volare), Bobby Goldsboro (Molly) and Bobby Darin (Irresistible You) dominated the music scene in the fifties and sixties. Our own Bobby Bright is represented too with a long forgotten classic ‘Would You Believe’. Of course Bobbie could also be a girl’s name as in Bobby Gentry (Ode To Billie Joe) and then there was Marcie Blaine’s popular hit ‘Bobby’s Girl’

These singers were great and the songs were catchy so sit back, relax and sing along.
