How? What? When? Where? The English language has many ways of asking questions. In popular culture and popular music questions are often posed to suggest insecurities, reflecting the agony/ecstasy of love.

This week we are presenting some songs which pose such questions. There is the anguish of romance in Culture Club’s ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?’ and Laura Branigan’s ‘How am I Supposed To Live Without You?’ which captures the moment after a love affair has finished. We’ve all been there haven’t we? Surprisingly, life goes on and we do live.

There are cries for validation in George Hamilton IV’s poignant ‘Why Don’t They Understand? and Moving Pictures’ dramatic plea ‘What About Me?’ There are less serious questions from Gerry and the Pacemakers, Dave Clark Five, Noelene Batley and Cliff Richard. And there’s the sardonic ‘Where Do You Go To’? by Peter Sarstedt.

Probably, the song that sums up all those questions that lovers ask is ‘A Lover’s Question’ by Clyde McPhatter. As well, we are presenting a track from the great songstress, Nina Simone. Her album ‘The Best Of Nina Simone’ is a wonderfully produced album featuring her clear diction and powerful voice.
