Yesterday Once More

17 Jun 2024

Streets and Thoroughfares

50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, Music, Nostalgia, Songs

Streets highways, lanes and alleys have all featured in a myriad of songs. Sometimes they are the setting for social comment as in Ralph McTell’s classic Streets of London or Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street, or sometimes they are a metaphor for sadness as in Sammi Smith’s poignant Saunders Ferry Lane.

There is outright exuberance too with David Bowie and Mick Jagger singing up a storm in Dancing In The Street.

Aussie contributions include AC/DC (Highway To Hell), Richard Clapton (Girls On The Aveune) and The Go Betweens (Streets of Your Town).
