Beginnings And Endings

Music

Hi Listeners

This week we are presenting a program of contrasts: beginnings and endings. Synonyms of beginnings and endings are present in many pop songs. Gloria Gaynor’s ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ uses the common situation – the ending of relationships – while SKeeter Davis with her one hit wonder ‘End Of The World’ underlines the agony of the ending of a relationship. Saying good bye is another form of ending. Elvis’s ballad ‘Until It’s Time For You To Go’ and Aussie, Lynne Randell’s ‘Ciao Baby’ signal departures. The Beatles have it both ways in ‘Hello Goodbye’. Earl Grant, sounding very much like Nat King Cole, performs ‘The End’ – a very pleasant ballad.

Beginnings can take many forms. Two obvious ones are the Bee Gees’ enigmatic ‘I Started A Joke’ and Brenda Lee’s heartbreak in ‘It Started All Over Again’. The Kalin Twins sing about the beginning of young love in ‘It’s Only The Beginning’.Beginnings in the form of the start of the day feature in Jay And The Americans ‘Dawning’ and Vanity Fare’s ‘Early In The Morning’. From left field comes another type of beginning – the start of a dance – in the old standard ‘Begin the Beguine’ sung by Johnny Mathis.
