Show 570 / 1 April 2017

(Joe McElderry)

Welcome to another hour of A Touch Of Pink, your show for tracks with a pop trash / gay / remix flavour. This week we have another show choc full of GLBTIQ content. The only one in doubt is Q, but I have my suspicions.

Back from my New York trip (where I encountered the ‘New York blizzard of 2017’ and survived), no great CD’s purchased on that trip, but did see some great shows (reviewed below).

My Song Of The Week is “Symphony” by Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson (see above). Another great track from this band featuring the delightful Zara on vocals, and what a wonderful voice she has! Their last single was huge all over the world, and they deserve a lot of praise for producing some simply great pop music.

Here follows tonight’s playlist. Tune in this Saturday on JOY 94.9 from 6-7pm for a bakers dozens of fab-u-lous tracks. Your host is Dick.

What I saw in New York on my sabbatical …

MUSICAL : School Of Rock : The new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on the film starring Jack Black. Lots of fun, the kids are great, and as ALW says, the kids play all their own instruments. An uplifting soundtrack and story, plus it’s just a lot of G-rated fun.

MUSICAL : The Great Comet Of 1812 : Brilliant musical performed in the round, with a Russian setting, Russian music and a plot about a woman whose betrothed goes off to war, and she has an affair while he is away with devastating consequences. Currently starring Josh Groban.

PLAY : Present Laughter : A great British farce from Noel Coward. Lots of posh people having affairs and getting caught out. A treat to see Kevin Kline and a stellar cast on stage

MUSICAL : Waitress : Wonderful adaptation of the movie with music by Sara Bareilles. The plot revolves around a woman working in a diner with an abusive husband on the side. She enetertains herself and the diners by baking some exotic pies. (The deep dish blackcurrant with bacon sounded lovely). A sometimes heartbreaking story beautifully performed, and I could swear I smelled pies baking when entering the theatre.

MUSICAL : A Bronx Tale : Advertised as a cross between Jersey Boys and West Side Story, it’s a plot about about a young white guy from an Italian neighbourhood in the 60’s who falls for an African-American girl, and the ramifications. Well performed etc. but I felt we’d seen this before.

PLAY : Significant Other : Happy (Act 1) and sad (Act 2) play about gay guy who sees his 3 best girlfriends get married and drift away while he is still looking for his significant other. There is some wonderful dialogue in there, the relationships are very relatable, all in all an emotional night out. Hope it comes to Oz.

MUSICAL : Amelie : Quirky and whimsical musical based on the delightful French film, about a young woman who spends all her energies sorting out everybody else’s problems, while she is hurting inside. She had a troubled childhood, and escaped into her imagination constantly. But there are some pleasant surprises in store for her. Not essential viewing but sweet.

PLAY : The Present : An Australian production of an imagined sequel to a Checkov play, or as one reviewer said, Checkov on steroids. Full of histrionics, gunfire and even a bomb, this is alternatively dramatic overload and tender remembrances. I left the theatre wrung out, it was certainly an entertaining and strangely humorous event.

MUSICAL : Sunset Boulevard : With Glen Close reprising the role (she turned 70 on the night I saw it) she made famous, it was great to see this again. Full of drama and pathos, with a co-star with an amazing body, this was a treat for show queens everywhere.

MUSICAL : Cirque Du Soleil’s Paramour : This was Cirque Du Soleil’s attempt at a Broadway musical with acrobatics, and for the most part it worked. Set in the 20’s, with a plot about a film producer seeking to make a new female “star” , the music was fun (electro swing), and the acrobatics were excellent (as you’d expect) if a little distracting.

MUSICAL : Come From Away : Wonderfully uplifting musical (based on a true story) about a small town of 9,000 people, in Newfoundland, Canada in 2011, which, when the twin towers came down, was host to 200 planes (7,000 passengers). The planes were all bound for the USA but couldn’t land because their borders closed after the attack. The town had to look after these people for about a week, before the borders opened again. There was even a gay couple (well, of course there would be). More great music and that Canadian quirkiness.

MUSICAL : On Your Feet : Actually, the Gloria and Emilio Estafan, the rise to fame for this Cuban couple, and the devastating consequences of Gloria’s bus crash horror accident. All put to the music of the career. Conga!

MUSICAL : War Paint : Camp as tits musical about the rivalry between Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden from the 1940’s, as they both tried to corner the cosmetics market in a world run by men. Some wonderfully bitchy scenes and fabulous constumes. What more could you want? Reminded me a little of the Tim Finn musical The Ladies In Black.

MUSICAL : Groundhog Day: Another musical based on a film, this time the film starring Bill Murray. It concerns a newsman forced to relive a single day while in small town America doing a story about a groundhog predicting an early spring (or not), and his subsequent road to redemption. This was another Tim Minchin written show, and very cleverly staged. After the wonderful Matilda, Tims Minchin certainly has shown an aptitude for musical adaptations.

FILM : Get Out : Well crafted horror film about young black guy and his white partner, who go to visit her parents (for the first time). She says there won’t be a problem with her parents because they voted for Obama twice, but as you’d expect this is not quite the case. Strange goings on, funny looks, and a lot of blood later on. For fans of this genre.
