Thank God it’s Anna Brown.

News & Politics, Society & Culture

anna_brown_humanrightslawcentre2Joining Dean in the studio is Anna Brown, Globe’s 2014 LGBTI Person of the Year and lawyer with the Human Rights Legal Centre.

Today’s hot topics include a quick look at the Australian Equality Party’s QQandA Forum held earlier in the week, a chat about the new Commissioner for Sexuality and Gender, Rowena Allen and we ponder just why the Australian Christian Lobby has chosen to attack two of the community’s most successful organisations in the Safe Schools Coalition and Minus18.

Then the focus of the conversation turns to the disconnect felt by many LGBTI people from Evangelical Christian backgrounds.  Using extracts from last weeks sermon by Dale Stephenson, Senior Pastor of Crossway, Victoria’s largest Baptist Church, Dean illustrates the insidious language used  towards people of faith who are struggling to reconcile their sexuality.  Pastor Dale then invites Benji to the stage to share his story of bringing Jesus into his life
to save his sinful life from eternal damnation.  We recommend watching the full presentation here to get a complete understanding of mental mind games and tormenting nature of this “exgay process”.

In short, Benji is paraded in front of the parishioners as a shining example of how “Giving your body over to God”, combined with countless expensive “conversion sessions”, will ensure your pathway to heaven.

All of this is taking place here in Melbourne RIGHT NOW.

Meanwhile, in the USA, a landmark civil-rights case known as JONAH, conversion or ‘exgay’ therapy has been found to be fraudulent.  After three weeks of hearings, a jury of seven men and women took three hours to rule the founders of Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (Jonah), had broken the state’s consumer fraud protection law.  The company has been ordered to pay $72,400 in damages to its former clients, for failing to cure their homosexuality.  The Judge is still considering if their licence to practice should be canceled.
