A life’s work: Gilbert Baker’s gift of pride to the world

The world over, the rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTI community – its diversity, its vibrancy, its colour and even its defiance.  This internationally recognised symbol was born in a period of protest but has stayed as an icon of gay pride.

  • Why was it so important to create a symbol of gay solidarity in the 1970s?
  • What does each individual colour mean?
  • What has changed from the initial design to the one we see and wave today?

Remembering the creator of this iconic symbol who passed away in America, we hear how the flag came about from interviews with the man himself – Gilbert Baker

Originally broadcast on April 4th, 2017.
