Been There Done That

22 Apr 2015

Vaccines, Pasteur, Earth Day, ANZAC Day, Suez, R.Brooke, Erasure

With all the consternation at the moment surrounding vaccination and fresh-milk cheeses, we remember that on this day in 1862 Louise Pasteur first tested the concept of eliminating ‘bugs’ from milk and other liquids, providing us with the safety of pasteurisation.

Back in April 1970, the first Earth Day was held, raising awareness in favour of environmental reform. And further back in April 1859 the construction of the Suez Canal began.

We bemoan the commercialisation of ANZAC Day and admire those embroiderers and quilters who created beautiful artistry while honouring our fallen heroes. And what was the connection between poet Rupert Brooke and Gallipoli?

We remind you that 25 April is also the birthday of Andy Bell from the band Erasure, a gay HIV+ singer. Plus some trivia and mirth.
