History – old and new

With the annual Melbourne Open House viewings, we remind ourselves of the historical relevance of some of Melbourne city buildings and are sad at those which seem to be disappearing with every new high-rise tower.
History still happens – even in these times. It is about 50 years ago that manned space adventures began, including the 6 landings on the Moon by the US – a feat not achieved by any other country. The patriotic pride at that time was celebrated in a corny song (at the 22 minute mark):  ‘There’s an American Flag on the Moon tonight’ – Bobby Dimple & the Lunar Ladies Chorus.
The mystery of the Rosetta Stone solved and the weirdness of seeing the first kangaroo by European explorers is explained.
Sarah Waters writes for a discerning audience; she is best known for her novels set in Victorian society and featuring lesbian protagonists, such as Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith.
These topics and much more in this podcast. Enjoy.
