Been There Done That

11 Mar 2015

Labour Day, Mardi Gras, Jupiter, Canberra, Carnegie & Barbie Doll

Gay, History, Icons, Lesbian

On Labour Day 2015 we celebrate the origins in Melbourne of Labour Day, the concept of 8 hours work, 8 hours rest and 8 hours personal time; now considered to be the international standard towards which all workers world-wide could aspire, along with other workers’ rights.

We chat about the Sydney Mardi Gras march, and reflect upon the freedom we currently enjoy in Australia. Find out about the ‘Jupiter Effect’: when fanciful theory is actually quite loopy.

Phil reminds us about how the worldwide web came into being, we talk about the naming of Canberra and our local suburb of Carnegie, and the effect the Barbie Doll seems to have made on women’s body image.
