Welcome to Game On! JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Tuesday from 7-8pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about you and how you can get your game on by showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive and welcoming for the Rainbow community. Where you can have fun and make life-long friends while you get fit and fabulous.
Louise Milligan, Reporter with Four Corners joins us to talk about about tackling a culture of silence in the AFL. The Silence: AFL’s Last Taboo aired on Monday and is available on ABC iview. The program is a must watch featuring insightful interviews exploring why after a 100 year history, 5000 former male players and 800 current male players, the AFL is the only major sporting code in the world that hasn’t had an elite male player publicly identify as gay. (2:17)
It was wonderful to hear of the support of allies like Eddie McGuire and his support as Collingwood President from 1998-2021 for the Pink Magpies starting up in August 2001. The first AFL Pride Group now called Collingwood Pride and still going strong. And it was terrific to learn that the AFL Pride Groups are rallying to drive change with a series of requests in response to Tanya Hosch, Executive General Manager Inclusion & Social Policy AFL asking the Rainbow community to provide guidance on what more should be done by the league.
Kade Matthews, Community Development Manager, Proud2Play is a guest for the very first time in the JOY 94.9 Studio to share all about an incredible ground-breaking exhibition at the Australian Sports Museum celebrating the achievements of LGBTIQA+ athletes. The Pride Showcase is a permanent exhibition opening Friday August 25 on Wear it Purple Day. The exhibition features the stories of trailblazers such as Ian Roberts, Ellia Green, Sally Shipard, Ricki Coughlan, and Josh Cavallo. Their unique stories in sport are told through a mix of physical items and multimedia elements, with parts of the stories told in the athletes own words. (14:10)
There is an amazing new resource to help you find an inclusive sporting club across Australia – the Proud2Play Activity Directory. Kade is responsible from that too! Check it out and get involved in one, two, three, four or more sporting clubs right across Australia. It’s so easy to use! If you have a sporting club and you’d like it listed, drop Kade a line and make sure you’re included! (24:10)
Have you thought about talking up golf but you’re too shy, not got any golfing gear, don’t know anyone who wants to head out for a hit? Do we have a the perfect solution for you! Jack Hendy, Co-Founder of Melbourne Rainbow Golfers joins us to tell us how you can tee off with a bunch of new golfing friends! (32:29)
