Jamie Wright, in sunny Queensland, a member of the Sunshine state’s first and only LGBTIQA+ inclusive water polo club the Brisbane Tritons joins us to share their amazing success at the IGLA (International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics) London 2023 – International LGBTIQA+ Masters Aquatics Championships from 25-30 June. Gold and gold! Enjoy travelling with the team and also the gorgeous Fortitude Valley Pool in Brisbane – complete with palm trees. Checkout the the Come & Try days and make sure to head along to the Spring Rainbow Grudge Match on the 30th September with the Brisbane Hustlers! Reef or Beef – time will tell! Erik Denison, Researcher, Social psychologist, Behavioural Scientist at BehaviourWorks, Monash University shares some ground-breaking research into how to tackle homophobic language sport and it’s not where you think! “Until the Australian and state governments start to prioritise protecting children from harm in sport and fix the structural and institutional problems which put them at risk, there is likely to be limited benefit from delivering one-off educational interventions’ .
A lever which may work as recommended by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is for councils, which often run sporting facilities and fund local clubs, to step in and help clubs comply with child safety standards and by introducing “safe sports officers” to attend training and matches, and help drive positive change. The call to action is to speak to your local council and and advocate for change at the local level. (Interview starts 10:37)
Cameron Forster, Past President and Founding Player Adelaide University Sharks Rugby Union Football Club and the squad are raring and ready to go for their first tour – the Purchas Cup hosted by the Perth Rams in Boorloo on the 8/9th September. Cameron shares his journey in sport and how it led him to achieving an impressive 50 games in June! Have a great tour and may your mascot make it home in one piece! (Interview starts at 23:43)
Sport meets art in our wonderful chat with Vipoo Srivilasa, talented Melbourne based Thai-born Australian artist, Ceramicist and Visual Artist. Vipoo was a Recipient of the Australian Sports Museum Basil Sellers Creative Arts Fellowship in 2019 and has five unique pieces in a permanent exhibit at the Australian Sports Museum. You can get involved with Vipoo’s next exhibition project to be produced and presented by Australian Design Centre in Sydney titled re/JOY. Seven ceramic objects will be selected and transformed into new artworks. (Interview starts at 32:41)
In Who is getting their game on? this week – Stephen, a fantastic volunteer at the Australian Sports Museum. Stephen shares why as a father of three sons, two who identify as gay, pride games are so important especially in the AFL, being a die-hard St Kilda supporter.(Starts at 40:43)
