UNAIDS’ vision of “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths.” is the theme of this year’s World AIDS Day (1 December).

2014 has been a significant year for the Victorian HIV and AIDS response with the meeting of AIDS 2014 conference in July. The entire City of Melbourne and the State of Victoria were activated around the issue of HIV and AIDS along with the 14,000 delegates who attended the conference.

A year ago on World AIDS Day we were welcoming Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi to Victoria. As we reflected upon our collective achievements over the past year, especially around the activities of AIDS 2014 conference, we know there is still much work to be done.

This year’s World AIDS Day is just as important as the last one and we continue to look to the future with hope,” says Brent Allan, Executive Officer, Living Positive Victoria.

Associate Professor Mark Stoové is Head, HIV Research Program at the Burnet Institute and keynote speaker at the official launch event in Melbourne of World AIDS Day.

It is an absolute honour and privilege to be asked to be keynote speaker on HIV and public health research. This year coincides with the beginning of an era of true optimism in the 30 year fight against HIV. It is now recognised, both in Australia and internationally, that we have an armoury of prevention tools capable of delivering an enormous global reduction in the burden of HIV.

“The heavy lifting required to meet our aspiration of getting to zero has only just begun,” says Associate Professor Mark Stoové.

Speakers in order of appearance:

  • Ian Muchamore: President of Living Positive Victoria
  • Martin Foley: State Member (elect) for Albert Park
  • Paul Smith: Deputy Secretary: Mental Health, Wellbeing and Ageing Division, Victorian Department of Health
  • Dr Mark Stoové: Senior Research Fellow, Head of HIV and Sexual Health Program at the Centre for Population Health, Burnet Institute
