Some say there has been a disconnection between former Premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett and the GLBTI Community. However, for many in the gay and lesbian community, the opening sentence of Mr. Kennett’s recent article on parenthood in the Herald Sun Newspaper was the proverbial final straw and only reinforced their perceptions. “There is no substitute for parents of both genders. Happy heterosexual marriages are the best environment for the mental health of children”, he said. As the Chairman of Beyond Blue, it was interpreted by many that Mr. Kennett’s attitude towards what constitutes a loving family, was counter to the objectives of the national anti-depression agency he heads. Furthermore, sections of the gay community called on him to resign his position as chair. After weeks of mud-slinging, JOY 94.9 became involved in the debate, making headlines on the front page of the Sunday Age, (2nd Oct.). At the invitation of JOY 94.9’s President, David McCarthy, Jeff Kennett was invited to clarify his views directly with the GLBTI community. On The Line today, Dean Beck details the back story before David McCarthy speaks exclusively to the Chairman of Beyond Blue, Jeff Kennett. Together they reveal a new commitment to working together for better mental health outcomes for the GLBTI community.
