A special tribute to those how have experienced homophobia in Sport, followed by Jason Ball, the 24yo Aussie Rules Footballer who stood up to the AFL, challenging them to tackle homophobia and the architect of the campaign, founding Director of Change.org, Nick Allardice.
Last Friday the AFL announced it will begin the process of change and over the weekend the organisation took the first step in being the change, screening the No To Homophobia adverts at two preliminary finals matches.
The battle to get the AFL to acknowledge the existence of homophobia within its code, has been fought by many over the last 2 years.
People like Dr Carolyn Symonds, Associate Professor Lynn Hillier, Peter Gourlay, Rob Mitchell, Doug Pollard, Human Rights Commissioner Karen Toohey and her predecessor Dr Helen Szoke, Ben Hartung from Hockey Victoria, Chris Tanti from Head Space, Matt Finnis CEO of The AFL Players Association, Ben Hart, Dr Pippa Grange, Jill Stark, Seamus Bradley, Nathan Bourke, Russell Robinson and many more.
However, it is the tens of thousands of GLBTI individuals – people that you and I will never know – that have experienced homophobia and that have never felt safe to be a part of sport – these are the people I would like to dedicate the following tribute to.
The developments over the last week are just the very beginning of what will be a long and arduous journey – but finally we’ve started.
Oh – there is one other person I would like to dedicate this to. One man who advanced the fight against homophobia in sport, more than any other.
Jason Akermanis, this is for you.
