Love & Desire

ABS_Main_Onlineposter_MA15+To celebrate the theatrical release of Luca Guadagnino’s ‘A Bigger Splash’ alongside our special interview with this fascinating director, we take a look at some of the best European films to mediate the tension between love and desire. From ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’ to ‘Heartbeats’, these are films that traverse the sometimes dark, sometimes disempowering spaces between desire and love.

To begin our exploration, we hear from Luca Guadagnino about some of the influences behind his compelling body of work, and the ‘deep dark pit’ he says most directors fall into. We also talk with Peter Strickland, the director of the deeply referential ‘The Duke of Burgundy’, which is showing at this year’s MQFF. Finally, we chat with Genevieve Kelly about the upcoming Spanish Film Festival, and the different generic conventions that Spanish filmmakers often employ to mediate the tension between love and desire.
