For this episode of Out Takes, we explore the inspiring and eye-opening terrain of the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, and look at some of this year’s most affecting films to engage in the human rights discourse. These are powerful films that examine a broad range of topics: war, the environment, gender equality and LGBT issues.
HRAFF is a not-for-profit arts organisation that explores diverse human stories through, amongst other mediums, film. We’re joined by the festival’s Program Director, Malcolm Blaylock, to discuss what makes a film a ‘human rights’ film, and why audiences come back time and again to these important films.
We also speak with the makers of ORIENTED, a documentary that explores the lives of three gay Palestinian men as they struggle with their identities against a volatile political climate. screens as part of this years HRAFF line up, and also featured earlier this year at MQFF.
