The Wonderful (Queer) World of Disney

maxresdefaultThis week on Out Takes, we celebrate the theatrical release of Disney’s The Jungle Book by revisiting some of our favourite Disney films and asking: can we queer Disney?

Disney (the man, the myth, the films) has often been chastised for purveying heteronormative, patriarchal, imperialist and capitalist cultural norms, for relentlessly guarding that most sacrosanct institution: the nuclear family.

But can we read Disney against itself? Can we deconstruct Disney? We chat with noted academic Eleanor Byrne, author of ‘Deconstructing Disney’, who says yes.

From drag and same sex desire in Mulan, to the disavowal of docility and traditional gender roles in Frozen, we look at range of Disney films coded with latent queer potential.
