Out Takes

Reel Queer Youth

This week on OUT TAKES we explore the representation of youth in film by looking at some of the most groundbreaking and gritty films to revel in the liminal and inherently queer no1131748-mans-land of adolescence. These are films that pack a punch; films that remind us how raw and uncomfortable growing up can be: think KIDS from Larry Clark, or Gregg Araki’s teen apocalypse trilogy: TOTALLY FUCKED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, and NOWHERE.

As part of our inquiry, we speak with Constantine Giannaris, whose mediation on youthful nihilism and cultural disillusionment – SPRING AWAKENING – is showing in Melbourne as part of this year’s Greek Film Festival. SPRING AWAKENING tells the story of five disenfranchised teens who embark on a violent rampage across Athens.

We also speak with Henry Alberto, director of the upcoming House of Mayhem. Based on a GLAAD award winning play by David Pumo, House of Mayhem is a raw and unflinching look at bullied and abandoned  LGBT kids, and the alternate families that they create. House of Mayhem is in the last days of a seed-and-spark fundraising campaign: seedandspark.com/fund/house-of-mayhem.

Essential viewing: Kaboom (2010) Dir. Gregg Araki.

Hungry for more: Kids (1995) Dir. Larry Clark.
