Todd Haynes: from Superstar to Carol with Phyllis Nagy

In an Out Takes exclusive, we’re joined for this show by Phyllis Nagy, the Oscar nominated screenwriter behind one of this awards season’s most critically acclaimed films: CAROL.

UnknownDirected by Todd Haynes and based on Patricia Highsmith’s groundbreaking classic, The Price of Salt, CAROL tells the story of the sacrifices two very different women must make to pursue an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. But while the film has received rapturous reviews, its 18 year journey to the big screen was fraught with difficulty. Only one person – Nagy – stuck with the project for the full course of that journey. She joins us to discuss Haynes, Highsmith, and CAROL’s journey to critical success.

To celebrate the theatrical release of CAROL we page homage to the films of Todd Haynes. From the aggressively experimental SUPERSTAR to the nostalgic and referential FAR FROM HEAVEN, we chart the rise of one of New Queer Cinema’s most interesting and influential auteurs: his distinctly visual sensibility, panache for luscious period story telling and pastiche, and (queer) evocation of identity politics.
