Legal foes join forces against hate and prop 8

No one expected Prop 8 to pass. In Ryan White and Ben Cotner’s documentary, The Case Against 8, that line is uttered more than a few times. Everyone knew there was still plenty of progress to be made, even in a liberal minded state like California. But this is the home of Hollywood and San Francisco – no one expected Proposition 8 to pass!

And yet, after a campaign of misinformation, fear-mongering, and in many cases, outright lies, Prop 8 did pass. And the LGBTI couples who had exchanged vows in California received a most unwanted letter – they were no longer married.

But what must have felt like a massive canon ball dropped upon California’s gay and lesbian married couples was actually the beginning of an extraordinary, and ultimately uplifting, battle. And while the ultimate result is an epic, heartfelt, human journey – the biggest surprise comes in the form of two well known American lawyers.

When George W. Bush was squabbling with Al Gore over who would become president, the conservative Ted Olson became a household name as he represented the would-be Republican president, opposite Al Gore’s David Boies. In The Case Against 8, Olson and Boies join forces to take Proposition 8 to the very top of the American justice system. Make no mistake – these two will surprise you.

On this edition of Saturday Magazine, director Ryan White joins Ben Rylan and Macca in the studio as they discuss the truly incredible documentary film.
