Our special guest in this episode of Sidelined: Extra Time is Rowen D’Souza. Rowen is the founder of the Glam Slam, Australian Open Pride Day, committee member of Vic Tennis, the Melbourne-based LGBTIQA+ tennis group, and CEO of the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance, a global LGBT sports organization that sanctions amateur tennis tournaments all over the world.
Rowen chats to us about the origins of the Glam Slam, how Tennis Australia have both celebrated and taken practical steps to show their commitment to inclusion of the LGBTIQA+ community at the global phenomenon that is the Australian Open. He gives his insights to why male tennis players may be reluctant to come out, and the challenges and courage of LGBT tennis players daring to stage GLTA tournaments in countries unfriendly to the rainbow community. We discuss the conundrum that is Margaret Court, and share his own personal journey of love for the game of tennis.
With guest appearances on the grounds of the AO Pride Day from Victorian Equal Opportunity Commissioner Ro Allen, players and finalists in the Glam Slam, and tennis legend Billie Jean King.
This is Sidelined Extra time delivering to you insightful interviews with sporting leaders and legends focused on making sport safe, welcoming, inclusive and fun for the Rainbow community.
Recorded at the JOY 94.9 Studio in the magnificent Victorian Pride Centre.
