Melbourne International Comedy Festival: Ovariacting: A Period Drama; Denouement; and Space Cadette

It’s week 2 of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and our guests in the Cabaret Room include:

Jamie Boiskin: Ovariacting: A Period Drama (interview starts at 9:50)

Jamie Boiskin’s a menstrual activist on a mission to stop men backing away from the word ‘period’.  Informative and riotous, this cabaret fights period stigma with slut drops, tampon bullets and a RuPaul-inspired uterus. Joined by menstrual activist protégé Thomas Bradford on piano, back-up dancers, and a lot of attitude, Jamie’s bringing the conversation about ‘women’s issues’, ‘having the painters in’ and ‘the warzone in her underwear’ out of the dark and blinking into the 21st century. Join Jamie and her gang of Merry Menstruals for a bloody good cabaret about the elephant in the room.

James Hazelden, Chris Saxton & Kimberly Duband: Denouement (interview starts at 22:18)

A sublimely silly and frenetically farcical comedy whodunnit. A stately English home, an amateur detective, a missing will, a bloody knife. Everyone is a suspect. Anyone could be the next victim. Nothing is what it seems. A traditional thriller descends into a surreal and subversive celebration of the genre complete with surprise twists, suspicious characters and sparkling black comedy.

Laurie Black: Space Cadette (Segment starts from 40:24)

Bored of Earth? Join alien babe Laurie Black and her spaceship synthesiser on the way to Planet Better – well, the next nearest thing… the Moon! Sultry piano and synth beats from London-based wannabe First Girl On The Moon. Original musical comedy.
