Several candidates for the seat of Higgins join The Informer to discuss their battle to win the seat away from the Liberal party’s Kelly O’Dwyer.
Carl Katter (Labor), Rebecca O’Brien (Marriage Equality) and Eleonora Gullone (Animal Justice Party) tell us why you should vote for them.
The Liberal Party’s Kelly O’Dwyer declined to come on the show, with her office providing The Informer the following statement:
“Local member for Higgins, Kelly O’Dwyer has been performing.
Kelly has not only been elevated to a Cabinet position as Minister for Small Business and Assistant Treasurer in the Turnbull Government, she has delivered a number of important projects for the community.
Keeping the community safe, CCTV cameras in South Yarra and Prahran have been installed and more cameras are being installed in nearby suburbs.
Funding to clean up the Yarra River and Gardiners Creek has been provided.
Native trees are being planted as part of environmental works.
Solar panels will also be installed for community groups, with $100,000 in grants announced for Higgins.
Kelly is fighting for South Yarra station to be included in the new Melbourne Metro Rail project.
Supporting women and girls in sport, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull recently joined Kelly O’Dwyer to announce $4 million for a new multi-purpose sporting facility, with a focus on netball.
Regarding same-sex marriage – Kelly’s views are widely known.
If the Coalition is re-elected, a decision on same-sex marriage will be made by all Australians via a plebiscite after the election.
Kelly will be encouraging the Australian people to support a change in the definition of marriage so same sex couples can be married.
On the national stage, Kelly the Small Business Minister is delivering tax relief for small businesses.
Small businesses will benefit from the Turnbull Government’s company tax cut to 27.5 per cent from this Friday.
The Coalition is lifting the threshold for small businesses with a turnover of $2 million to a turnover of less than $10 million – businesses that Labor labels as ‘multinationals’.
Two million small businesses will benefit from the Coalition’s tax cuts and concessions including the $20,000 instant asset write off.
The Greens are also not willing to fully support small businesses – cherry picking the Coalition’s strong policies.
Our national economic plan will boost growth and jobs.”
