Playlists

Show 283

My Sharona by The Knack.  debut single by The Knack, released in 1979 from their album Get the Knack.  Was a huge hit – twice – after appearing on 1994’s Reality Bites soundtrack.  Sharona Alperin was the lead singer’s girlfriend and appears on the album cover…today she’s a real estate agent in LA.

No Way to Cry by Bill Lyerly. 1982 folky cover of this Tommy Tutone tune that I can’t seem to find.

+Cookie Puss by The Beastie Boys. Their 1983 debut single. Believe it or not, I get to tick the LGBTIQ box for this release as it featured Kate Schellenbach on drums & percussion and she’s an out lesbian. (she was with them from 1981-84).

+Tight Black Jeans by Tret Fure.  First track on 1986’s Edges of the Heart.

Don’t Say Goodbye by Rick Astley.  debut album Whenever You Need Somebody (1987). Although the song was considered for worldwide release, it was only released in Italian market in late 1988.

Bad Connection by Yazoo. Request.

The Telephone Call by Kraftwerk. Request.

+Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John.  1975 John-Taupin song, and, in fact, the only single they ever set out to write on purpose.  John asked Bernie to write a song called Philadelphia Freedom for his good friend Billie Jean King as it was the name of her tennis team.

Release Me by Wilson Phillips.  second single from their debut album Wilson Phillips. It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 15, 1990 and spent two weeks at number-one. It also topped the adult contemporary chart for one week that same year.  Didn’t chart here.

Aussie women

*Hot Minutes by Renee Geyer and the Ideals. From 1980, her lone excursion into hard rock.

*Ordinary Man by Collette Roberts. From her 1989 debut album, Raze the Roof. Kiwi-born Aussie artist not to be confused with the American DJ Colette.

*Substitute by Peaches. Sydney girl band scored this hit in 1978.  It is a cover of a tune by Clout.

*+Inside my Kitchen by Tiddas. 1992 title track to their first EP.  Lou Bennett started her musical career with her uncle’s band “The Shades”, before later joining Richard Frankland’s band “Djaambi”, where she met Sally Dastey and Amy Saunders—Bennett, Dastey and Saunders later formed Tiddas.  Bennett is a Yorta Yorta/Dja Dja Wurrung woman from Echuca. Her autobiographical show, Show us Your Tiddas, has scenes of her coming out to her family…I’ve not seen it so I don’t know how it went!

*Party Jam by Danni Minogue.  First track on her self-titled debut album from 1990. It was also the name of the album for the Japanese market.

*+Dicks Don’t Grow on Trees by Robyn Archer. From her second album, Take Your Partners For… The Ladies Choice, from 1978.  She’s listed on a site of gay and lesbian Australian musicians…and we’ve now confirmed!

+Outside your Door by M’Shell Ndegeocello. Request.

Sex by Berlin.    They signed with Enigma Records in early 1980s where they had their first significant hit: the controversial synth-driven “Sex (I’m A…)” (1982), which was banned by some radio stations due to its graphic lyrics.

Praying mantis by Don Dixon.  1985 tune that I discovered on a United airlines flight when I listened to the new wave channel over and over again.  He’s better known as a producer, working with REM, Smithereens, Guadalcanal Diary, Kim Carnes, Hooti and the Blowfish, and dozens of others.  This is from his solo debut, Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Like to.

MacArthur Park by Donna Summer.  Written by Jimmy Webb that was originally composed as part of an intended cantata. The song was initially rejected by The Association. Richard Harris was the first to record the song, in 1968. It was subsequently covered by numerous artists. Among the best known cover of the song is this Donna Summer disco arrangement from 1978.

Together in Electric Dreams by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder.  British singer and composer Philip Oakey and producer Giorgio Moroder…of Flashdance fame. It was written by Oakey and Moroder and recorded for the original soundtrack of the 1984 film Electric Dreams.  It later formed part of the joint album Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder, released in 1985.
