Playlists

Show 305

Sex Crime by The Eurythmics. With 5 requests. This wasn’t the first but it’s my fave track from them. From Michael Radford’s film 1984, though you won’t hear it anywhere on it…there was controversy, studio vs director strife, etc.. Great album, though!

Avalon by Roxy Music. Request.

+If you ask me I won’t say No by Pete Shelley. Bisexual former frontman from the Buzzcocks with a track from his second solo album, XL1, from 1983.

+Time I Spent by Margie Adam. 1983 single from this women’s music pioneer. She was a headliner back in the day with Meg Christian and Chris Williamson. Oh, and she’s a lesbian.

America by Prince. Request.

+Sofro by Nau. Brazilian band fronted by Brazilian LGBT activist Vange Leonel; she came out as a lesbian in 1995. This was a 1987 single from a compilation album called, Não São Paulo, Vol. 2. She died of ovarian cancer in 2014.

+Amazon by Maxine Feldman. From her 1979 album, Closet Sale. She’s another early figure in the women’s music scene, but as an out lesbian in the pre-Stonewall era/early days of gay pride awareness, life was really tough. She was kicked out of university and only recorded this single album.

Simon Says by Secession. Scottish synthpop band that only existed between 1983 and 1987. The original incarnation comprised Peter Thomson, Jack Ross, Jim Ross and Carole L. Branston.  Their discography is a bit oddly listed as this track doesn’t appear anywhere except on the B-side to a 1987 the full length album version single of Radioland.

Yes Sir, I can Boogie by Baccara.  1977 hit single by the Spanish vocal duo Baccara. They were selected to represent Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest 1978 but only lasted till 1983 when both women went off to explore solo projects.

Aussies from Adelaide: a lot easier than I thought!

*Ita by Cold Chisel – 1980 release about lisping tv personality Ita Buttrose.  Ita later thanked Jimmy Barnes for this song because it made her children think she was cool.

*To her door by Paul Kelly:  The highest charting local hit in 1987.  It’s always kind of annoyed me that she took him back even though she had to pay for his ticket…

*After the Rain by The Angels.  1978 song off Face to Face by The Angels (known as Angel City in the US cuz there was already an Angels band there).  They formed in Adelaide in 1974 as the Keystone Angels but dropped Keystone in 75 and eventually relocated to Sydney.

*Rock and Roll Soldier by Glenn Shorrock. Single from his 1982 solo album, Villain of the Peace. It hit the top 40 here in Oz but went nowhere overseas, despite the huge fame he had as part of Little River Band. He’s from Adelaide…

*I’ve been to Bali Too by Redgum. 1984 single from Frontline, their 5th album and the last with John Schumann, who wrote the track. Like Peter Garrett, Schumann has run for parliament, but he failed to unseat Alexander Downer.

*Quick on the Draw by The Stars.  Adelaide band The Stars first came to prominence with this song, produced by Beeb Birtles of Little River Band fame in 1976. Beeb along with rest of his band were impressed with the Stars and brought tapes back to Melbourne where they scored a contract with Mushroom records. The band sported a “cowboy” look wearing boots, checked shirts and cowboy hats.

Imagine by John Lennon. Released in 1971 in the USA, but in 75 in the UK. Request.

Badlands by Metal Church. Request.

21st century Boy by Sigue Sigue Sputnik. They were a British New Wave band formed in 1982 by former Generation X bassist Tony James.  This is the first track on side 2 of their debut album, Flaunt It. It was also their second single that year, 1986.

Time for Keys by Nine Ways to Win. Final track on their self-titled 1983 album debut. They formed in Oxford in 1983 and appear to have put out just the one album. One of the band members was called Ranald Macdonald…

Archeopterix by I Signori Della Galassia. From their only album, Iceman, released in their home country of Italy in 1979. Their name means The Men of Galaxy.
