Playlists

Show 303

On Tape by The Pooh Sticks. They were an indie pop band from Swansea, Wales recording between 1988 and 1995. They were notable for their jangly melodiousness and lyrics gently mocking the indie scene of the time, including in this track from 1988. It was also on their 1989 album, Orgasm.

+Silent X by Tonex. 1994 independent release from this gospel singer who came out as gay in 2009. He is now known as B. Slade.

Send in the Clowns by Judy Collins. Request from Kari for the weirdness in the US…

+A different Corner by Wham!. 1986 single from The Final, the band’s third and final album. It is slightly different from the third and final album they released in the US & Japan, Music from the Edge of Heaven. The track lists differ a bit and this song is re-mastered…not sure what the US version sounds like.

+I’m Still Standing by Elton John. Request.

+Everything she Wants by George Michael. Request.

It’s a Fine Day by Jane. 1983 poem written by English poet Edward Barton and recorded by his girlfriend, Jane Lancaster. It was put to music by Opus III in 1992.

The Missionary by Josef K. 1982 release by this Scottish band, named after the protagonist of Franz Kafka’s novel The Trial. They released just one album while together and achieved only moderate success.

We Stand Alone by Ultravox. Request.

I’m bored by Iggy Pop. Request.

Aussies from Tasmania…or about it since I couldn’t find 6 from this era. Tons from earlier or later…

*Shy Girl by Beethoven.  Their debut single from 1975.  They were from Hobart and made up of singer/songwriters David Minchin, Charles Touber, Greg Cracknell, and drummer Brent “Beep” Jeffrey.

Other Places by MEO 245. Australian new wave band from the 1980s, formed in Melbourne, Australia by 3 Tasmanians and 1 Victorian…Tassie enough to be considered by some to be one of only two Tasmanian bands to ever have Australian chart success (the other being Beethoven). This is from 1981.

*The Legend of Moinee by Don Kay & the Tasmanian Symphony.   Donald Henry Kay was born in Smithton, Tas and has composed a number of classical works. This 1989 composition was awarded the best composition by a composer resident in Tasmania in the Sounds Australian awards.

*Sending a Vampire by Wild Pumpkins at Midnight.   From 1992. They are originally from Tasmania and made up of founders Dan Tuffy and Michael Turner with the addition of Ashley Davies, Greg Hynes and Nick Larkins. They were based in the Netherlands at this point but are thoroughly Aussie and have since returned here.

*Hello Love by Jean Stafford. Title track from her 1979 album. She’s from Tassie, but is half Native American.

*Truganini by Midnight Oil. From their 1983 album Earth and Sun and Moon. She was, of course, supposedly the last Tas Abl woman…a population of tens of thousands today. They didn’t kill everybody!

Dirty Mind by Prince. Request.

Candyskin by Fire Engines. 1981 release from yet another Scottish post-punk artsy band from Edinburgh…they hung with Josef K back in the day.

Fernando by Abba. Request.

Keep an Open mind or Else by McCarthy. From second album, The Enraged Will Inherit the Earth, released in March 1989.

Eres Tu by Mocedades. Request. 1973 Eurovision song from Spain, featured on 1995 film.

Chelsea Girl by Ride. From their 1990, self-titled EP. They featured Andy Bell on guitar…not the singer from Erasure but later Oasis’ guitarist.

Therese by The Bodines. 1986 release, their second. They were from Derbyshire and released a number of tracks between 1985-90.

Holiday by Madonna. Request.
