Show 379

So Long by Abba. Request.

+Gimme Gimme Gimme by Erasure. In 1986, Erasure, released it as the B-side to their 12″ single “Oh L’amour”, gave the song an even greater camp appeal, as gay male singer Andy Bell didn’t change a word. Such was its success – and the band’s appeal to gay audiences – that Erasure would go on to record a further EP of ABBA songs – Abbaesque.

Goodbye Seventies by Yaz(oo). Upstairs at Eric’s (1982) is Yazoo’s first album produced by the band and E.C. Radcliffe, and where Clarke and Moyet lived during its production.   This is 1 of only 3 songs on the album written by Alison Moyet. It’s one of my faves.

I’ve been Waiting for You by ABBA. Request.

Name of the Game by Abba. Request.

+You Make me Feel (Might Real) by Jimmy Somerville. Back in 1997 when we got together, this was ‘our’ song…

The Metro by Berlin. Pleasure Victim 1982. I had this on cassette and played it to death.

+Take a Chance on Me by Erasure. Request.

The Warrior by Scandal. Title track from their 1984 album.

The American by Simple Minds. Christian, an exchange student from Norway, introduced this to me before he realised there were much cooler people to hang with. It was released in 1981.

Sisters are doing it for themselves by Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin. Great feminist track and a favourite since it came out in 1985.

All you ever think about by The Flirts. From Questions from the Heart, released in 1986. Loved this and played it all the time on my university radio shows!

Aussie favourites take 2

*I should be so lucky by Kylie. From her 1988 self-titled album.

*Ita by Cold Chisel – 1980 release about lisping tv personality Ita Buttrose. Ita later thanked Jimmy Barnes for this song because it made her children think she was cool.

*Treaty by Yothu Yindi: composed by indigenous NT band Yothu Yindi in collaboration with Paul Kelly and Midnight Oil to protest the failure of the Australian Government to honour Prime Minister Hawke’s 1988 promise of a treaty with Indigenous Australians, made to them at the Barunga Festival. The song was remixed in Melbourne by Filthy Lucre in 1991 and rapidly climbed the Australian charts as did the album on which it was released, Tribal Voice (1992).

*Listening by Pseudo Echo. 1983 single, also included on their 1984 debut album, Autumnal Park.

*Boys in Town by The Divinyls. From the 1982 film Monkeygrip, starring Noni Hazelhurst, Colin Friels and a young Alice Garner…before she was Carmen on SeaChange and earned a PhD in history from Melb Uni.

*Hell’s Bells by Ac/Dc. From their 1980 album, Back in Black.

Earth Girls are Easy by Julie Brown. from the 1984 mini-album Goddess In Progress. In 1988 spawned a movie starring Gina Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Brown herself, Michael McKean, and the unknown Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans. I played it a lot in the 80s!

Cezanne by The Special Guests. 1986 track I played a lot on WRCU in Hamilton, NY…first station in the 90s (90.1 FM).

Let’s Bury Bob and Vulcan by Screaming Broccoli. The radio station I was on in the late 1980s had this on 45. Both tracks were on the same side so I used to play them both. I’ve edited out the silence between them to play them both here for the first time. So excited!!

Only You by Yazoo. From the same album, Upstairs at Eric’s. Clarke actually wrote it while with Depeche Mode but they never recorded it.

+There’s More to Love by Communards: 1987 or 88 release by Jimmy Somerville and the band, depending on where you lived. I got to see him at Brighton Pride in 2001 – still did an amazing show!

No More Words by Berlin. Pleasure Victim, 1982.
