Refugees In Oz

Arts, Health, News & Politics, Society & Culture

Australia was once a country that embraced those who needed a home.
In 1951, The United Nations formed a Commission for Refugees and Australia proudly signed the agreement to assist some 1.5 million people worldwide who needed to find a new land to live.
Today nearly 50 million people are displaced….. and about half of those, some 25 million people….no longer have a home to live in due to natural disasters.
For decades Australians have been willing to assist those in desperate need of help but in the 90’s something changed…the nation vocalised an un-empathetic, racially charged dialogue. During our Nation’s most prosperous years, we have become insular and selfish.
