Italy: Pasta makers in hot water

Europe

The Italian LGBT community is boiling mad. And the international LGBT community is taking note. Mr Barilla, owner of Barilla pasta, refuses to feature queer-friendly ads. And it’s caused international scandal.

Marco, an Italian ex-pat living at the Graduate Institute, joins the World Wide Wave to discuss LGBT rights in Italy.

“It goes beyond buying pasta from Mr Barilla….I was hurt more than anything by the fact that he said twice that LGBT people can’t exist,” said Marco.

Marcos explains that the problem goes beyond cuisine. “We cannot even pass in the Parliament a decent bill against homophobia. We still allow associations to critisise LGBT people.”

Although gay sex has been legal for over 130 years, homophobia remains strong in this Catholic country. “People have been mobbed at work, it is something real,” said Marco.

Marcos comments that the international pasta company has to be responsive. “They own a worldwide company, so they have to care. The [Italian] politicians go more on their people…politics does not care that much about what happens abroad.”
