Australia: Natural Disasters and their impact on the LGBTI Community

Asia/Pacific

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.

– From My Country by Dorothea MacKellar

In a land of frequent natural disasters, we explore the effects of droughts and flooding rains, cyclones and fire on Australia’s LGBTI community. Are LGBTI people more vulnerable after a natural disaster where many support and recovery programs are delivered by faith-based charities?

Following international research undertaken after the New Orleans floods and the Haiti earthquake which found discrimination levelled at LGBTI people, the University of Western Sydney in partnership with the University of Sydney are undertaking the study “Queering Disasters” – how LGBTI people have been impacted by natural disasters in Australia and the community response afterwards.

We speak with Dr Scott McKinnon, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Western Sydney. The study is conducting interviews with LGBTI people in Queensland who were affected by Cyclone Yasi (2011) and the Queensland floods of 2010-11. It will then move to Victoria.
