Russia: Fighting Putin through plays

Russian flag Broadcast – 26 January 2016

On Australia Day, we reflect on the country we have become today, with its many freedoms and opportunities to critique people in power such as the government. It’s not so in many other countries. We take you inside Vladamir Putin’s Russia – but through the eyes of an 19th century playwright.

  • What is the link between an iconic playwright and today’s gay community in Russia?
  • How do you turn an iconic 1895 play into a modern day one?
  • If he was alive today, what would Anton Chekhov think of his play being adapted with gay themes?

For an artistic look at Russia and its anti-gay laws, we are joined in the studio by Cheyney Caddy, the Artistic Director of Black Apple Theatre whose adaptation of The Seagull is part of the 2016 Midsumma Festival.
