Bosnia and Herzegovina: an invisible LGBTIQ community

The former Yugoslavian country of Bosnia and Herzegovina, or BiH, is a sometimes volatile mix of ethnicities with Bosniak, Serb and Croats sharing power in government.

Does a history of war and conflict impact violence against minority groups such as gays and lesbians?

Are homophobic attacks against the LGBTI community sending them underground or inspiring them to bring about change?

What power does the European Union have to bring about cultural change to this ethnically diverse country?

To understand gay life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we spoke with Lydia Gall from Human Rights Watch, based in Budapest. She spoke of the recent homophobic attack at the Merlinka Festival and the poor police response.
