Russia: exploring queer culture through spas

In the past weeks, social media feeds have been flooded with horrific stories of concentration camps and torture of LGBT people that seemed too unreal to be considered in 2017.  But these harsh personal stories have continued to emanate from Russia and the response the local government has not helped allay fears of open persecution and violence towards LGBT people.  We look at the Russian territory of Chechnya.

  • What role is Russia’s anti gay-propaganda laws having on the Chechen attacks?
  • Are the in fact similarities between Russia and Australia’s treatment of minorities?
  • As outsiders on the other side of the globe, should we get involved at all?

To help us decipher why homophobia is rising in Russia, we bring you:

  • Comedian Tom Ballard and academic Dennis Altman at last year’s Midsumma forum on Russia
  • An insider’s view from Sally Goldner, Executive Director of Transgender Victoria, who visited Russia as a guest judge at their queer film festival

Originally broadcast on April 18th, 2017.
