Yesterday Once More

Hi Listeners

Mossy has departed for an overseas trip to Eastern Europe. This means I will be presenting Yesterday Once More alone for the next four weeks. For next week I thought it was time to present another of our popular featured artists programs. This time highlighting the achievements of our own ex-pat singer, Helen Reddy and a now-overlooked folk/pop singer called Dan Fogelberg.

Both Helen Reddy and Dan Fogelberg share a common background. They were both from musical and/or showbiz families. Helen Reddy was the daughter of vaudevillians Max Reddy and Stella Lamond, sister of actress/singer. Toni Lamond and aunt of GLBTI actor, Tony Sheldon. On the other hand, Dan Fogelberg was the son of a classically trained pianist mother and a band leader father. Helen Reddy reached her peak in the 70s when she was called ‘Queen Of The 70s’ and Dan Fogelberg hit his critical and commercial peak in the early eighties with the release of his double album ‘The Innocent Age’.

After she moved to the US, Helen Reddy had 15 hits in the top 40. The first song in the program is ‘Angie Baby’, the narrative of a strange girl. Other songs include ‘I Don’t Know How To Love Him’, ‘Leave Me Alone’ and ‘Delta Dawn’ – all big hits for Helen Reddy. And, of course, the iconic ‘I Am Woman’ which became the anthem for second-wave feminism in the seventies. Dan Fogelberg’s melodic songs were sometimes taken from his personal life such as his tribute to his father (‘Leader Of The Band’) or a chance meeting with an old girlfriend (‘Same Old Lang Syne’). Perhaps his biggest hit was ‘Longer’. To round off his performance two other songs were the epic maritime song ‘The Reach’ and the poignant tribute to young horses running in the Kentucky Derby (‘Run For The Roses’).
